This attack was stopped after only a few days by emergency patches released by Microsoft. The damages caused by the attack was estimated to range from hundreds of millions to billions of dollars. In December, 2017 the United Kingdom, Australia and the United Stated traced the attack back to North Korea.
The ILOVEYOU virus is said to be the most dangerous virus ever created. This virus is believed to have affected more than 10% of the total computers online at that time and costing users more than 10 billion in damages. The effects were so bad that large corporations and government agencies took their mailing systems offline to eliminate the risk of infection.
Two Filipino programmers by the names of Onel de Guzman and Reonel Ramones used social engineering to lure people to click on the link. The link was titled Love Confessions.
